Whipworm

Whipworm
This worm lives in the intestines. Its eggs can be seen with a microscope.

The worms can grow up to 7cm in length with a thin head and a round read end. Infection is by ingestion of larvae which develop within the eggshell and are found in the caecum. Can cause diarrhoea with dark faeces but mostly there are no signs that the dog is infected. Treatment is difficult as the eggs shed on the ground can stay viable for several years making control difficult.
