Flat and segmented the tapeworm attaches itself by its mouth to the intestinal wall

Tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus, The tapeworm can grow up to 9mm in length and lives in the dogs intestine. Eggs shed by other dogs are eaten by a great number of intermediate hosts including humans. Sheep are infected more than other animals which the parasite develops into a cyst.

Dogs become infected by eating carcasses of sheep or deer which contain cysts in their tissue. Infected dogs can go unnoticed except for diarrhoea or bad general condition. More than a thousand worms at one time can be found in the dogs intestine. Wales has a control scheme involving supervised worming of dogs as practiced in New Zealand. The feeding of raw meet should be avoided.
