Interesting Facts about West Highland White (Westies)
- Eyelids
Did you know that dogs have three eyelids? They have an upper and lower
eyelid and a third one inside of the other two. It helps protect their eyes
from dirt and dust. It is also called a "haw."
- Potatoes
Although cooked, mashed potatoes are actually quite nutritious and
digestible for dogs, the solanum alkaloids found in green sprouts and potato
skins can cause rare cases of poisoning.
- Raw Onions
Raw onions have been known to cause hemolytic anemia (disintegration of
blood cells)
- Nuts
Many nuts are generally bad for dogs as their high phosphorus content is
said to possibly lead to bladder stones, especially walnuts. They are
poisonous to dogs and at all accounts should be avoided.
- Chocolate
Chocolate can trigger epileptic seizure in dogs prone to or at risk of
epilepsy. Chocolate can also cause cardiac irregularity especially if the
dog becomes excited which in turn can kill the dog. In Westies, chocolate
causes Internal bleeding which will kill them later. Treatment - within two
hours of ingestion, try inducing vomiting unless your dog is markedly
stimulated, comatose or has lost the gag reflex. If this happens, take it to
the vet without DELAY. In the absence of major symptoms, administer
activated charcoal as the unabsorbed theobromine chemically bonds to this
and is eliminated in the faces.
