Begin walking, keeping the dog close to your leg. If it pulls ahead or back jerk the lead gently and say 'Heel' Praise the dog when it obeys and walks correctly. Another good way is to stop or ever walk backwards for a few feet.

When you stop walking or approach a busy road command the dog to sit, you may have to push down its rump at first.
It will eventually learn to sit automatically.

Train your dog to wait and come, using a simple hand signal tell the dog to sit. With the dog sitting give the dog the command 'Wait' Holding the lead, walk around the dog making sure it stays in the same position all the time. Walk to the end of the lead, repeat the command 'Wait' if the dog moves start the exercise from the beginning.

Always walk your dog at your side which is farthest from the road. If the road in on your right, your dog should be on your left away from passing vehicles.
