Your puppy will try to please you at all times, this can be a very
trying period for both you and your Westie. You must be patient and very
understanding. Once you have established your training system stick to
it.
Your puppy must be able to go outside frequently and given the chance
to defecate before you bring him back in again. When he is inside you
need to keep a close eye on him, and be able to react quickly if you see
he needs to go again.
If you cannot keep an eye on him at all times, then you need to keep
your puppy in a comfortable location. I personally do not like the use
of crate's that are being use incorrectly to confine Westie's for long
periods of time. Far better to put a warm cosy bed in the kitchen, until
you are able to supervise his activities again.
When you do use a crate it has to be big enough so your Westie can
stand up and be able to turn around with ease. The use of a crate should
always be for less than 2 hours at a time, "Never" leave your Westie in
a crate all day while you are at work, this is very unkind. If you are
doing this, think seriously about finding a better home for him.
If crates are used correctly your Westie may regard it as his "Den"
and a designated space of his own. Use incorrectly they bring fear and
destroy the training process along with the trust he puts in you.
