West Highland White
Walking your Westie
West Highland White Terriers have short legs, so they have to move much
faster to keep up with you. While there is no real answer on how long or how
far you should walk your Westie, generally a mile or two is plenty.
Remember the walking environment will greatly reduce the walking distance
too, while a 2 mile walk is just fine on a level and comfortable ground, you
wouldn't include walking up hills or mountains in the 2 miles.
You wouldn't walk your Westie too far in hot weather either, they would
soon become unwell, also the ground they walk on could also get very hot and
cause more problems.
Your Westie's age and general health should also be considered, if your
Westie hasn't had much exercise before, then you cant go walking long
distances straight away, else he will be exhausted.
Just keep an eye on him, he shouldn't be panting excessively, and if you
stop, he should stop panting within a min.
Always take a bottle of water with you, and a small bowl you can easily
carry, give him a drink often as he needs it. Oh and always walk your dog on
a lead, flexi leads are good, but don't let him run about on his own we he
could get into danger. |
