West Highland White Marking Territory
Marking his territory is an old saying, mostly associated with wolves,
where they leave a message saying "Keep Out". However today's dogs mark
their territory just to let others know they have visited.
Marking Territory also serves to let any male/female know their in town
and available, a sort of calling card. Every tree, every bush, every
lamppost they will want to leave their calling card.
The amount of urine is small and is found primarily on vertical surfaces.
Leg-lifting and spraying are dominant versions of urine-marking, but even if
your dog doesn't assume these postures, he may still be urine-marking.
Even spayed or neutered dogs will mark their territory, so don't think
that having this unnecessary operation will stop this behaviour,
because it wont ! Your dog may urinate on new objects in the environment (a
shopping bag, a visitor's purse), on objects that have unfamiliar smells, or
on objects that have another animal's scent.
What can you do about it, books have been written with thousands of
things listed, they don't work !. You can discourage him, pull him away from
the objects, and mostly it wont be a problem, but you wont stop it
completely.
