The Supply of Relevant Veterinary Medicinal Products Order 2005

There has been many complaints sent in to this site about the vast difference in prices charged for medicines. For example the Malaseb shampoo has been quoted as being as high as £18 (250ml) at some veterinary practices, while its available on the internet for around £12.00 or less. (prescription required)

If you visit a veterinary practice, and are told you Westie needs a particular medicine, first ask if its a prescription medicine, and if it is, then ask how much it is. You are no longer required to purchase the medicine from the same vet, you can now ask for a free prescription, and can search for a cheaper supplier.

Naturally, your vet should administer any medicine immediately, if the problem is life threatening, but any repeat prescriptions can be purchased from another vet, or from authorised companies.

A pharmacy (Chemist) can also supply you with prescription medicines for animals, so ask your local chemist, and see what they will charge you. There is no doubt that the internet is much cheaper, however only buy from established reputably companies, don't by prescription drugs from places like ebay, you could end up with a lethal concoction.

So ask for a free prescription, you will need to give it to the company selling the prescription product.
