Phase-in period

The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS), which will replace the UK's quarantine regulations, will be phased in to give ferry operators, rail services and international airlines time to provide the required facilities. This will also ensure that the vital task of checking animals when they arrive is done efficiently and effectively. The scheme will be fully implemented by April 2001.

Route's 06 March 2000

  1. The Shuttle from Calais to Kent.
  2. Ferry routes from Calais to Dover
  3. Cherbourg to Portsmouth
  4. Caen to Portsmouth
  5. Le Havre to Portsmouth
  6. St Malo to Portsmouth
  7. Flights from Western Europe to Heathrow Airport (Not all Airline companies will be licensed the pilot scheme).

When P.E.T.S is fully implemented it will not be necessary for all animals coming into Britain to have a pet passport. Non-carnivorous mammals, such as rabbits, traveling from the same rabies-free countries, will need a veterinary health certificate

Quarantine will still apply to animals coming into the UK from non-approved countries
