The Pet Travel Scheme

The UK has changed its Quarantine regulations, The government recently announced a new scheme which allows dogs and cats to enter the UK from approved countries without having to go into quarantine, provided they meet certain conditions as outlined below. The scheme also allows you to travel to and from countries in Western Europe with your pet.

In September 1998 the government published the report by the Advisory Group on Quarantine (the AGQ) Quarantine and rabies: a reappraisal. The Advisory Group was chaired by Professor Ian Kennedy, and is also known as "the Kennedy Report". It set out the Group's recommendations for a reform of the U.K. quarantine regulations. 

 

  • The scheme only applies to dogs and cats,

  • It is limited to a list of approved countries, most of which are in Europe.
    Dogs for the disabled may also be able to travel by air between the UK and Australia and New Zealand

  • The scheme only operates on certain sea, air and rail routes to and from the UK.

  • Please note, the phrase "Passport for pets" is just a name given for the procedure you need to follow. 
    A passport is not really issued
