Infected pups can suffer from breathing and digestive problems whilst coughing may be a symptom.

A pot belly may also be a sign that the animal needs worming. In some cases Toxocara can give rise to 'fading pups' as well as still births and deaths in pups.

Can people be infected by these worms?. Yes, Unfortunately, young children and unwormed pups or kittens are not a very good mix. Around 100 cases of human toxocariasis infection are recorded each year and children are particularly at risk.

Other symptoms include stomach upset and pain, headache, sore throat, asthma and listlessness.
