Chocolate

Chocolate is bad for your Westie

Chocolate can be lethal to Westie's because it contains theobromine, which causes increased heart rate, over stimulation of the central nervous system and constriction of arteries. Symptoms range from vomiting, diarrhoea and hyper behaviour to cardiac failure, seizures and death. Baking chocolate is the worst because it contains the highest amount of theobromine.

If your Westie has eaten any chocolate you should contact your vet immediately.

Don't poison your Westie.
Even small amounts of theobromine, (ingredient in chocolate), can cause vomiting and restlessness in pets. Larger doses can be fatal. While most Westie owners expect a dog to develop an upset stomach after eating chocolate, few realize its toxic potential.

The lethal dose of theobromine

If an accident occurs, a vet should be consulted immediately. Treatment may require inducing vomiting, stabilizing the animal's heartbeat and respiration, controlling seizures and slowing the absorption of theobromine. If your Westie already is comatose, its stomach may need to be pumped.
