It might not seem like it but this site is ranked alongside the Taj Mahal
and the Pyramids. How come? Well, this is Darley Abbey mill; a few miles up
the valley is Cromford with its mill. That is where Sir Richard Arkwright
built his first mill in 1771 - which is where the concept of the 'factory'
originated. Mills were built right the way up and down the valley and put
the area at the heart of the industrial revolution. A 55 mile stretch of the
Derwent valley, including Darley Abbey, has been designated a UNESCO World
Heritage Site; hence the connection with the pyramids etc.
