Cromford canal

The Cromford canal was built to provide a route to market for the cotton
produced at Richard Arkwright's mill in the village.
The mill was opened in 1771 and introduced the concept of the 'factory'
to the world. This is the terminus of the canal at Cromford Wharf.
The original plan was for the canal to go all the way to Manchester but
the problems of getting over the Peak District hills proved too
difficult and it was never built.
The canal runs for about 14 miles to Langley Mill; today we will divert
about half way and head back for home.
