This is a recently completed replica of a coal wagon used on the Little
Eaton gangway.
The wagons were pulled by horses from the coal mines at Denby down to the
canal wharf at Little Eaton. The top part of the wagon was then lifted off
and lowered into the canal barge to continue its journey.
Probably one of the very first examples of 'containerisation' back in the
1790s.
