Increased Sebum Production (See also Moisture)

Some dogs have an increased production of sebum in between their toes, foul smell which attracts the dog to lick its paws excessively. The saliva often makes it worse, leading to blisters filled with pus and blood.

Sebum is produced by sebaceous glands, The oil on the surface of skin is a mixture of sebum, lipids, sweat and environmental material. These glands are all over the body, in the ear canal around the bottom etc.

Sebaceous gland disorders such as acne (Blackheads), What appears to occur in the development of acnes is an initial filling up of the follicle. This impaction of material is the whitehead and blackhead, bacterial growth in these impactions, the follicle ruptures initiating the inflammatory phase of the disease.

Dermatologic signs of fatty acid deficiency include a thin and discoloured hair coat, scaly skin, sebaceous gland hypertrophy with hyperkeratosis of the sebaceous ducts and increased sebum.

Fish Oil is a favourite supplement, as it seems to improve and help a lot of different problems.
