Seborrhoea
This is where your Westie might develop abnormal changes to the skin and
coat which causes excessive production of skin cells (keratinisation)
resulting in excessive scaling and dandruff.
The skin will have a greasy feeling, Seborrhoea can arises from several
different sources. Seborrhoea can develop from an unknown source
(Idiopathic) or secondary to other factors.
Oily seborrhoea, is where there is an excessive production of skin oil,
waxes and skin cells. Dry seborrhoea, where there is an excessive production
of skin cells. More biting and licking !
Sometimes inherited, Allergies, Endocrine
deficiencies, Parasitic infections,
Pyoderma, Fungal.
Treatment usually involves the reduction of inflammation, skin cell
overproduction, treatment for bacteria or yeasts.
Using the right shampoo in the early stages and fish oil supplements can
help. Sebolytic, Sebomild, Etiderm, Viacutan and Sebocalm are names of
shampoos used. |
