Saliva
If there is one cause of brown fur, it has to be blamed on saliva. During
the olden days it was believed if your newborn baby was licked by a dog the
baby would be a fast healer. The dogs saliva was once believed to be
antiseptic and some people still believe it has healing properties. But
while it may kill some bacteria, the dogs saliva contains its own bacteria
than can cause infections.
The saliva is produced in and secreted from salivary glands, clusters of
cells called acini, these cells secrete a fluid that contains water, mucus,
enzymes and electrolytes, all of which flow out of the acinus into ducts,
Within the ducts the fluid is altered.
Most animals have three major pairs of salivary glands that differ in the
type of secretion they produce. Parotid glands, produce a watery secretion,
submaxillary (mandibular) glands produce a mixed serous and mucous,
sublingual glands secrete a saliva that is mostly mucous.
Secretion of saliva is controlled by the dogs autonomic nervous system, which
controls both the volume and type of saliva secreted. Feed a dog a dry dog food
diet and a saliva that is mostly serous is produced, while dogs on a meat
diet secrete saliva with much more mucus. Its important to get the dogs
balanced diet right
