Malassezia
Yeasts, most notably a common contaminant of inflamed and environmentally
stressed skin called Malassezia pachydermatitis. Malassezia pachydermatis (Pityrosporum
pachydermatis or Pityrosporum canis) is a yeast that can be found on
the skin or ear
The organism causes disease when changes in the skin allow it to become a
"facultative pathogen". Many studies have shown that Malassezia
pachydermatis is a component of the normal cutaneous flora of the dog.
Healthy dogs can be carriers of this yeast, which can be found in the
external ear canal, the skin, the anal area, lips and coat which could be a
carriage zone.
When your Westie's defences are down, this will allow Malassezia
pachydermatis to multiply. Some of the factors that can lead to Malassezia
dermatitis include moisture, excessive waxy or
scaly build up (as in seborrhoea), and
allergic and bacterial skin disease.
Malassezia a secondary cause of dermatitis in any dog with one of these
predisposing conditions, but it may be the primary or initiating cause of
skin problems in Westie's.
Greasy, crusty, smelly skin but where there is Malassezia infection,
there is also extreme itchiness. < More licking More Brown Fur ! |
