Look after the hair
Hair also protects some dogs feet, ears and eyes from injury especially
in cold climates that are iced over regular. The skin and colour
pigmentation come from cells in the skin that produce melanin, the Westie
has a single colour gene, while the Dalmatian has two colour genes (Black &
White).
The condition of the hair mirrors the general state of health, dietary,
fats, nutrition, thyroid problems, hormone imbalances, pore infections, hot
spots all contribute to the hairs growth.
Its important to brush your Westie all year round, trim away excess hair
from his ears, inside and outside. Keep hair between the pads as short has
possible, you can use an electric nose trimmer designed for humans, use one
to remove the hair around pads.
A good hair shampoo is tea-tree-oil which can be purchased in any
supermarkets, its not going to hurt to wash your Westie once a week,
depending on how dirty he has become.
Above all, inspect the hair regular, keep an eye on the skin too, spot
any problems early. |
