The mother should brake the
membrane sac and start to lick the puppy, drying, stimulating it. Check to see if all
fluids have been cleared from the pups nostrils & mouth. It is wise to have the vet visit within a day or two to make sure all
the puppies are ok. Be sure that each pup starts nursing right
away, these first few meals will provide antibodies to help fight infection.
Labour may start from 2 to 24 hours, during this stage
she may be restless and pant quite a lot. She will begin to contract and it is wise to make a
note of the time this happens. The first pup should appear within an hour, contact
your vet for help if this has not happened. The pup will appear in a dark
colour sac of fluid,
which will be wrapped in another fluid membrane. The puppy should be born soon
after this stage.
